Cookie's Story

June 14,2011 Until now, Cookie had lived a tough life, void of any love. She had been an outside dog, forced to deliver litter upon litter of puppies, then was dumped at the shelter once she got too old and could no longer produce puppies.
By the time she was rescued, Cookie was in very poor health due to the years of abuse and neglect she had endured. She arrived at her foster home on the night of Tuesday, June 14th, a little weak but in good spirits, happy to be out of the shelter. That night she ate a good dinner and looked happy to sleep on a dog bed inside the house, perhaps for the first time in her life (she looked at her foster mom with an expression that said "“Seriously?! For me?!”).

June 15, 2011 However, by Wednesday morning, it became obvious that Cookie's health was deteriorating very fast. She was refusing to eat, and could not get up from her bed without help. Dr. Watase at Anza Animal Clinic saw her that very morning, and had terrible news for us: Cookie had Pyometra, a very serious disease where the uterus becomes infected, and she had already started to go septic. She needed emergency spay surgery, but due to her advanced age and her weak state, it was highly unlikely that she would pull through the surgery.
But thankfully, our brave little girl fought hard and pulled through! She even recovered amazingly fast in the hours following the surgery, and was able to go back to her foster home the following day.

June 16, 2011 Cookie is now getting some well-deserved rest. Once she feels better, she will need another surgery on her eyes to treat Entropia, which is a condition that causes the eyelids to roll inward, causing the eyelashes to rub painfully against the cornea. In addition, Cookie has been suffering with some skin issues, which will also need to be treated in time.
Despite everything she's gone through, Cookie has the sweetest, most loving spirit in the world. She's always smiling, and loves to be right by her foster parents' side, particularly her foster dad whom she seems to have especially bonded with. One of her favorite things to do is to gently place her head on his lap while he's working on the computer. That's the beauty of saving a life... dogs know when you save them, and in return, they thank you every day with unconditional love.
